Welcome to Slave Play, a sharp, provocative, and wildly entertaining theatrical sensation that has sparked conversations from Broadway to London. Now making its Canadian premiere, this electrifying play by Jeremy O. Harris turns up the heat on love, race, and relationships in ways that are bold, unexpected, and impossible to forget.
A daring, seductive, and razor-sharp satire, Slave Play takes audiences on a journey where pleasure and history meet, flipping assumptions and igniting sparks along the way. It’s a show that’s as playfully cheeky as it is thought-provoking, designed to make you feel, think, and maybe even blush.
Welcome to Black Out Night
October 7, 2025
Launched in 2019 by Jeremy O. Harris and Dominique Morisseau during the Broadway run of Slave Play, Black Out performances have since expanded internationally. These initiatives play a role in informing future programming that focuses on diversifying voices, outreach, accessibility, and fostering an equitable theatre culture.
The purpose of a Black Out performance is simple: it’s about creating space for Black audience members to engage with work made by Black artists, together. A Black Out performance is neither exclusionary nor prescriptive; it is a community event designed for Black audiences to connect with the work in a meaningful way. Though the intention is to create a space for as many Black identifying audience members as possible, no one will be turned away. This performance will feature a talkback with a special guest, to be announced, as well as a post-show party!
Slave Play runs at Canadian Stage from Sept 27 - Oct 18. In keeping with our commitment to accessibility, Canadian Stage offers various affordable ticket options, including Pay-What-You-Wish evenings, Rush tickets, and Arts Worker and C-Stage programs. We welcome conversations with our staff about the event’s purpose and intentions.
Tickets for Black Out Night will be available soon!
