Show synopsis

An emotionally rich and comedic 90-minute staging of Twelfth Night - a story of shipwreck, disguise, longing, and the messy, joyful transformative power of love in all its sizes. In Shakespeare’s beloved comedy of love and mistaken identity, Viola is shipwrecked in Illyria and disguises herself to survive. Chaos and desire ensue as she falls for Orsino, who pines for Olivia— who, in turn, falls for Viola’s disguise.

Submission Notes:

Seeking a game ensemble of good, fun people with strong classical text skill, comedic instinct, and openness to collaboration. Seeking performers of all backgrounds.

All performers contribute to the musical and physical life of the play. Musical ability (singing and/or instrument) an asset for all but not necessary. As ideas develop, the ensemble may be an essential driving force in the play.
Performers must be game to explore various modes of theatrical storytelling as ensemble members in assisting with scene changes, peopling the world (ie sailors on the coast, etc), filling out the sonic world of the play, and working together to build an ensemble driven, rich telling of the story.

  • PLEASE INDICATE IN NOTES IF YOU SING/PLAY ANY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
  • ACTORS MUST BE TORONTO LOCAL.
  • We are accepting submissions via Casting Workbook, as well as directly using the form found at this link.

Show synopsis

Goodnight Desdemona is the story of Constance Ledbelly, a quirky and absentminded academic who is writing a doctoral thesis about two of Shakespeare’s tragedies. Suddenly, Constance finds herself transported into the worlds of Romeo and Juliet and Othello, where she interferes with the plot, gets to know the characters, and discovers her true identity.

Audition Information:

We are currently accepting submissions for the following roles:

JULIET/STUDENT/SOLIDER: Female-identifying. 18-40 years old. *To play a teenager.

  • JULIET - Willful, spirited, smart, indulged rich girl. Given to falling in love at first sight. Insists on getting her own way and is ready to lie in order to do so.
  • STUDENT - Not so into the whole academic thing. Is not mean, but can’t help finding Ms Ledbelly funny and pathetic. Lies easily.
  • SOLDIER OF CYPRUS - Loyal. Stiff. Straight-up.

ROMEO/CHORUS/IAGO/GHOST: Male-identifying. 18-40 years old. *To play a teenager.

  • ROMEO - Willful, spirited, indulged rich boy. Given to falling in love at first sight. Insists on getting his own way, and is ready to lie in order to do so.
  • CHORUS - Inspired by Rod Serling from the old Twilight Zone series. He knows secret stuff. His tone is both welcoming and slightly sinister.
  • IAGO - Scheming. Bitter. Intelligent. Ruthless. Pleased with himself. Thinks on his feet.
  • GHOST - This is the ghost of Yorrick, the famous jester from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Not only does he quote/do a good impression of the Ghost of Hamlet's Father, like all ghosts he is not bound by space or time, and he is therefore also up on old cliché jokes (the kind made famous by “Borscht Belt” comedians of the mid twentieth century).
