"Each piece of Jocelyn's programming is strange, striking and cerebral – and he believes Toronto audiences are up for the challenge. The best part is, he's right."

– TORONTO LIFE
Kiss & Cry by Michèle Anne de Mey & Jaco Van Dormael (14.15, 15.16 seasons).

Canadian Stage's groundbreaking production of Helen Lawrence by Stan Douglas & Chris Haddock has toured throughout Canada and internationally to the United States and Europe.

History

Canadian Stage was created from the 1987 merger of the small, alternative Toronto Free Theatre and Toronto's acknowledged regional theatre, Centre Stage Company. In July of 2009, Matthew Jocelyn joined the company as Artistic & General Director. After 8 months of exploring the local and national arts ecology and canvassing the company's stakeholders, he unveiled his first programmed season (2010-2011), along with a new company mission and brand, Canadian Stage. Over the past six years, Canadian Stage programming and aspirations have focussed on the contemporary (in aesthetic, technology or theme), the multidisciplinary and the international. Su Hutchinson joined the company as Managing Director in April 2012, with a mandate to build the financial and administrative model required to support and sustain the new artistic project.

In its 29 year history, Canadian Stage has employed thousands of artists and developed and produced hundreds of new productions. Many of the plays developed by Canadian Stage have been awarded and nominated for Canada's most prestigious literary and performing arts honours, including Governor General's, Chalmers and Dora Mavor Moore Awards. Throughout the theatre season, nearly 100,000 patrons attend performances and workshops in our three Toronto venues. Throughout our history, Canadian Stage has provided outstanding education and outreach programs cultivating a diverse audience demographic.

At a glance:

  • Canadian Stage has presented 270 productions over 29 years
  • The company has been nominated for 320 Dora Mavor Moore Awards
  • Our productions have travelled across Canada and internationally to Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the United States, Belgium, Germany and Austria
  • Productions and events attended by 100,000 patrons annually
  • In the last 5 years, over 39, 000 arts education participants and 1,600 volunteers have been engaged through the company’s youth and outreach programs
