Volunteer for Shakespeare in High Park with Canadian Stage

Play a starring role this summer in Toronto's longest-running and most popular outdoor theatre event! Canadian Stage invites individuals to spend evenings under the stars volunteering for the 34th edition of Shakespeare in High Park as we present William Shakespeare's Hamlet and All's Well That Ends Well. June 30th to September 4th 2016.

What's Involved

Canadian Stage is seeking reliable individuals, 15 years of age or older (12 or older if volunteering as a family), who are friendly, enjoy theatre and have excellent customer service skills to join our diverse team of volunteer ushers at Shakespeare in High Park. Responsibilities include greeting patrons, accepting donations, answering questions and assisting our patrons finding seats. Shifts are available onsite in High Park from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, from June 30th to September 4th. Volunteers are required to complete a minimum of six three-hour shifts over the summer. Full training is provided.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers see Hamlet and All's Well that Ends Well for free and are also rewarded with tickets to Canadian Stage's upcoming season, a Shakespeare in High Park volunteer t-shirt to work in, backstage tours, an invitation to our annual appreciation barbeque, games and prizes. Volunteers will also develop leadership and customer service skills. All of our volunteers become a member of the Toronto Attractions Council Reciprocal Program where you receive unique offers to many of Toronto's fun summer attractions! In addition, students can earn hours towards their community service requirements as well as a letter of reference for future job searches.

How to sign up

If you would like to be involved, attend one of three Volunteer Recruitment Sessions hosted by Canadian Stage at Berkeley Street Theatre. It is mandatory that you attend one of these three sessions in order to enroll as a volunteer.

Space is limited, so make sure to RSVP with us to reserve a spot! Contact Robin at volunteers@canadianstage.com or at 416.367.8243 ext. 273 and indicate which Volunteer Recruitment Session you plan to attend.

Volunteer Recruitment Sessions will be held from at 26 Berkeley Street on the following dates:

  • Saturday June 4, 2 pm-5 pm
  • Thursday June 9, 6pm-9pm
  • Tuesday June 14, 6pm-9pm

26 Berkeley Street is located south of Front between Parliament and Sherbourne Streets. Click here for a map & directions

Please Note:

  • Attendance at a Volunteer Recruitment Session is mandatory. Arrive on time, bring a pen and your list of exact available evenings to volunteer.
  • Allow 90 minutes for the Shakespeare in High Park presentation and to sign up for shifts.
  • You will be required to choose a minimum of six (6) shifts between the dates of June 30th to September 4th.
  • Volunteer shifts occur on site at the Shakespeare in High Park venue from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Volunteers may invite as many friends as they wish to sign up to volunteer with them.
  • Mandatory training sessions will be held in High Park at the end of June.

Policies for reserving premium seating

  • Reservations are accepted until 5pm on the day of the performance.
  • *Reservations are only held until 7:45pm, so please allow extra time for any delays.
  • Upon arrival, present your printed ticket at the gate to be escorted to the Premium zone on the hill where you can sit on available cushions.
  • If the performance is cancelled due to inclement weather, you will receive a Premium rain voucher to redeem for another performance (subject to availability). Vouchers may be exchanged in advance until 5pm the same day as the new performance. Please call the box office 416.368.3110.
  • Premium seating ticket donations are not eligible for a tax receipt.

Getting to High Park

Plan to arrive early by allowing ample travel time during the increased activity this summer.

When planning your trip to the park, a good resource is the City of Toronto's Road Restriction Map that is useful in the summer months for potential construction diversions.

High Park is located in Toronto's west end, stretching from Bloor Street West in the north to The Queensway in the south and from Parkside Drive in the east to Ellis Avenue in the west. View map. High Park is easily accessible by foot, bicycle, TTC or car. Please note: parking in High Park is extremely limited.

Notices & Accessibility

Rain
Rain and lightning conditions are assessed at 8pm. If the performance cannot safely commence without endangering the cast and audience, the performance will be cancelled and you will receive a voucher to redeem on-site for complimentary admission to another performance (subject to availability).

Lawn Chairs
Lawn chairs are not allowed in the regular seating area of the hill. A limited number of spots at the rear of the hill are available exclusively for lawn chairs. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Accessible Seating
Limited accessible seating is available. Please see the Hill Supervisor upon arrival for more information.

Pets
Pets are not allowed in the High Park Amphitheatre, with the exception of service animals.
