Free Childcare at the theatre

Your kids enjoy a fun arts workshop while you see the show with friends

For our 2013.14 season, we are pleased to offer on-site child-play, featuring arts-based activities for children aged 3 to 12, giving you a reliable childcare option. Childcare will be provided by Improv Care and is free with a ticket to select performances. Improv Care has been providing professional on-site group child and youth care to organizations throughout the city since 2002.

How our childcare program works

This program will take place in the Ernest Balmer Lounge (just off the upstairs lobby of the Bluma Appel Theatre) for shows at the Bluma Appel Theatre and in the Boardroom at 26 Berkeley Street for shows at the Berkeley Street Theatre. The space will be entirely cleaned and outfitted with furniture and toys for the children. Water and light snacks will be available. The program will be offered from 1:30 pm to 15 minutes following the end of the performance for matinee dates, and from 7:30 pm to 15 minutes following the end of the performance for evening dates. Space is limited and will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis.

How to reserve and register

  • Call our box office at 416.368.3110 to book your ticket to one of the performances where childcare is offered. Mention that you'd like to register a child for the childcare program. Please know the number of children you’re bringing and their ages. We’ll also need your email address to send you a registration form.
  • We’ll email you a registration form. It is necessary to fill this out for safety and informational purposes. Improv Care offers an inclusive experience; please specify any language or physical requirements as well other special needs on the form.
  • Send the completed registration form and email it to Holly Laflamme, Education and Audience Development Coordinator, at hlaflamme@canadianstage.com. Please note your child(ren) won’t be considered registered until we receive their form(s).
Please note: Completed Child Registration Forms must be received no later than the indicated deadline in order to plan appropriately for staffing and supplies. Registration will close at this time. If you have not received an email confirmation number and reply directly from Holly, your child or children will not be accepted in the childcare space on site due to The Day Nurseries Act child-to-staff ratios that Improv Care strictly adheres to. Guardians must be a relative, over 18 and be attending the show and remain on-site for the duration of the program. Maximum two children per adult to ensure as many families as possible can participate. If you require accommodations, please contact Erin Schachter at the email address below.

We hope to see you and your kids at the theatre. If you have any questions please contact Erin Schachter, Education and Audience Development Manager, at eschachter@canadianstage.com or 416 367-8243 ex 280. You may also contact Dahla MacKenna at 647-287-5433 or dahla@improvcare.ca to learn more about Improv Care.
