The Public Servant is a comic-tragedy about the women who administer the affairs of our country. Step inside the halls of power as Madge, a young, idealistic and enthusiastic civil servant, gets ready to write her first official memo.

Inspired by interviews with more then 40 federal, provincial, and municipal public servants, The Public Servant offers a rare window into a world so familiar, yet so foreign to many Canadians. The idea emerged over a campfire conversation many years ago. We were ruminating about all the great songs about miners and farmers and civil rights activists. "Why are there no songs about the people who get budgets in on time?" we asked. "What about the people who work behind the scenes, to help us reach decisions that can make everyone happier, smarter, kinder or healthier?" and so the play was born.

After a sold-out run in Ottawa at The Great Canadian Theatre Company, Common Boots is partnering with Nightwood Theatre to bring this hard-hitting and hilarious play to audiences in Toronto to ask: doesn’t a successful society — one that is engaged, working, healthy, and educated — require a successful civil service?
