JUL 4 - SEP 1
Shakespeare in High Park, one of Toronto's favourite summer traditions, returns for its 37th season with two adaptations of the Bard's most popular and enduring works. The battle of sexes is on full display with a comedic tale of love and desire, Much Ado About Nothing, and the timeless story of morality and power, Measure For Measure.

“We are very lucky to have this Toronto summer institution going strong… the experience of Shakespeare in High Park is near-magical, and not to be missed.”

What's Involved

We're looking for theatre-lovers 15 years of age or older (12 or older if volunteering as a family) with excellent customer service skills to join our diverse team of volunteer ushers at Shakespeare in High Park. Responsibilities include greeting patrons, accepting donations, answering questions and assisting our patrons finding seats. Shifts are available onsite in High Park from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, from July 4th to September 1st. Volunteers are required to complete a minimum of six three-hour shifts over the summer. Full training is provided.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers see Measure for Measure and A Midsummer Night's Dream for free, get tickets to Canadian Stage's upcoming season, a Shakespeare in High Park volunteer t-shirt, backstage tours, an invitation to our annual appreciation barbeque, games and prizes. Volunteers will also develop leadership and customer service skills. All of our volunteers become a member of the Toronto Attractions Council Reciprocal Program where you receive unique offers to many of Toronto's fun summer attractions! In addition, students can earn hours towards their community service requirements as well as a letter of reference for future job searches.

How to sign up

If you would like to be involved, attend one of three Volunteer Recruitment Sessions hosted by Canadian Stage at Berkeley Street Theatre. It is mandatory that you attend one of these three sessions in order to enroll as a volunteer.

Space is limited, so make sure to RSVP with us to reserve a spot! Contact us at volunteers@canadianstage.com and indicate which Volunteer Recruitment Session you plan to attend.

Volunteer Recruitment Sessions will be held from at 26 Berkeley Street on the following dates:

  • June 2 - 10:00am - 12:00pm
  • June 5 - 6:00 - 8:00pm
  • June 11 - 6:00 - 8:00pm

26 Berkeley Street is located south of Front between Parliament and Sherbourne Streets. Click here for a map & directions

Please Note:

  • Attendance at a Volunteer Recruitment Session is mandatory. Arrive on time, bring a pen and your list of exact available evenings to volunteer.
  • Allow 90 minutes for the Shakespeare in High Park presentation and to sign up for shifts.
  • You will be required to choose a minimum of six (6) shifts between the dates of July 4th to September 1st.
  • Volunteer shifts occur on site at the Shakespeare in High Park venue from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Volunteers may invite as many friends as they wish to sign up to volunteer with them.
  • Mandatory training sessions will be held in High Park at the end of June.

What is Shakespeare in High Park?

Founded as Dream in High Park in 1983, Canadian Stage's Shakespeare in High Park is one of Canada’s largest and longest-running professional outdoor theatre events, taking place at the picturesque High Park Amphitheatre. Two alternating productions are presented throughout the summer.

How much does it cost?

This is a pay-what-you-can, general admission event. Admission is always free for your kids (14 and under). To help us cover the costs of producing Shakespeare in High Park, we recommend a suggested donation of $20 at the gate; cash, debit, and credit are all accepted. Gates open at 6pm, so come early to snag the best spots on the hill!

Can I get tickets in advance?

For a $30 donation, you can reserve a cushion in the premium zone for your preferred performance. Print out and present your ticket at the gate and you're set. Seats within the premium zone are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and we can only hold them until 7:45pm.

Premium seats are available by donation online or by phone at 416.368.3110.
Reservations are accepted until 5pm on the day of the performance.

What if it rains?

Because summer weather can change on a whim, rain and lightning conditions are assessed at 8pm. If the show can't safely proceed we'll cancel the performance and issue rain vouchers for another performance (subject to availability).* We recommend bringing an umbrella in case of light drizzles during the performance.

*Please note rain vouchers may be exchanged in advance by calling the box office before 5pm the day of the new performance.

Can I bring a lawn chair?

To make sure everyone gets a good view of the show, lawn chairs aren't allowed in the regular seating area on the hill. We do have a limited number of spots at the rear of the hill that are available exclusively for lawn chairs on a first-come, first-served basis.

Is there an accessible seating area?

One of our friendly park volunteers will be happy to show you to our accessible section on site. Patrons with accessible needs can call the box office at 416.368.3110 to reserve a seat in advance.

Are pets allowed?

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed in the High Park Amphitheatre, with the exception of service animals.

Can I bring my own food?

Totally. Come early and pack a picnic! We also have a concession stand on site stacked with yummy snacks and beverages for purchase. We recommend bringing your own water bottle as there are no fountains on site.

Can I bring a bottle of wine with my picnic?

Due to City of Toronto Parks regulations, alcohol is not permitted in High Park.

Are the shows kid-friendly?

Shakespeare in High Park productions are fun, accessible adaptations of the original plays with contemporary themes. They're certainly family-friendly, but since it's Shakespeare, there can be some mature content. If you have questions, just give our box office a call at 416.368.3110. Stroller parking is available on site, just ask our staff to direct you to this area.

What else should I bring?

Depending on the month, it can get a little chilly when the sun goes down, so bring a blanket. We perform in a giant park, so bug spray is also recommended, and available for sale at our concession stand.
