Sonja Smits spent three seasons as ‘Megan Redner' on the Gemini award winning series "The Eleventh Hour", five seasons as "Sally Ross" in the multi-award winning series "Traders", earning a Gemini nomination for Best Performance by an Actress, six seasons as ‘Carrie Barr' on the acclaimed series "Street Legal", garnering a Gemini Award for Best actress and a Gemini nomination. Smits drew rave reviews for her performance as ‘Morag Gunn' in Anne Wheeler's television movie "The Diviners", which earned her another Gemini nomination, and the Blizzard Award for Best Actress. For her performance in the TV movie "War Brides", she received an ACTRA nomination.
Ms. Smits also starred opposite Judy Davis in "Me And My Shadows: The Judy Garland Story", which received 13 Emmy Award nominations; and in Moze Mossanen's dance film, "The Rings Of Saturn", in which she performed a lead role opposite the National Ballet's Rex Harrington. As well, she performed lead roles in "Man From Mars", a short film directed by Lynn Stopkewich; "Dead Husbands", co-starring John Ritter and Nicolette Sheridan; and "Tek War", based on the books by William Shatner. For episodic television, Smits performed a recurring role on "Odyssey 5" opposite Peter Weller, and guest spots on "The Royal Canadian Air Farce", "Made In Canada", "The Outer Limits", "Counterstrike", "The Ray Bradbury Theatre", "Spencer For Hire", "The Fall Guy" and "Falcon Crest".
No stranger to the silver screen, Ms. Smits was seen in the independent Canadian feature "Siblings", directed by David Weaver and "A Different Loyalty", starring Sharon Stone and Rupert Everett. Her film credits also include Clare Kilner's "How To Deal", with Mandy Moore and Allison Janney; and "Owning Mahowney", starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. Smits received her first Genie nomination for her supporting role in David Cronenberg's cult classic "Videodrome"; and garnered a second Genie nomination for her lead performance in "That's My Baby".
Renowned for her stage performances, Sonja Smits was a guest star performer in the U.S. tour of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues". She portrayed "Anna" in George P. Walker's "Nothing Sacred" at Toronto's Winter Garden Theatre, a role she reprised for the play's television adaptation for CBC. Her theatre credits also include Judith Thomson's "Perfect Pie" at the Tarragon Theatre; "The Graduate" at the Grand Theatre in London, "Summer In Smoke" and "Uncle Vanya" at Theatre Calgary; "Significant Others" at the Beverly Hills Playhouse; and "Later" at the Toronto Free Theatre.
Smits is a founding member of the ACTRA Women's Caucus and Vice President of the Harbourfront Centre Board. She was honoured by Women in Film and Television (Toronto) for outstanding achievement and was given the ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence (2004).
