SET IN GREENWOOD, MISSISSIPPI on July 4th, 1964, this free adaptation of August Strindberg's classic notches up the sexual and political tension of the piece by setting the action two days after Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. The adaptation by Stephen Sachs is deemed scandalous, dangerous and controversial, as was the original when it premiered in 1888. It is also a revelation.
